Learn How to Promote Yourself – Network

Elevator Pitch for Katie

Image by Marco Wessel via Flickr

This is something a lot of people are afraid to do. Come on people, it’s called networking! There is no harm in promoting your product, or service to other people in a non forceful way. There is always a right way and a wrong way of doing things. You can pretty much promote yourself at any giving time you just have to know how to do it.

Things you should not do. I call them the 3 “Don’t Be’s”:

  • Don’t Be overbearing. People hate feeling like they’re being forced into something. You have to create a natural dialogue.
  • Don’t Be to talkative. You should be able to explain your product or service in approximately 30 seconds – 2 minutes. It’s called the elevator pitch. See example below, you may click on the image for a better view.

  • Don’t Be unprofessional. I don’t care if you’re talking to your friends or family, when promoting yourself make sure to present yourself in a professional manner. This is good practice.

You should make sure to practice the above in front of love ones, a mirror, or while you’re in your car; remember practice makes perfect. I’m challenging you to promote yourself at your next event. Don’t come off to strong, just have a natural conversation and you will do just fine.

New Year’s Resolution: Apply For Business Grants

Two New Year's Resolutions postcards

It’s about to be 2011 and I know one of your New Year’s resolution is to get out of debt and start growing your wealth. What better way to do this then starting your own business! To often we talk about starting our own businesses, but never act on it. For me, one of my biggest challenge and fear is the funding. As you may know this is an extremely important part. This is how you will pay your employees, the rent, buy your supplies and the list goes on. Basically this can make or break your business.

Personally, I will write a business plan, get an EIN number, do research on my specific market, find the location, think about ways to market the business, get business cards, get a 1-800 number; you get my drift. However, when it comes down to launching the business I’m always stuck at where do I get the funds to start it. I know you can get loans from banks, but with the economy the way it is today, that’s a lot harder to do now.

Well, once again DBM has gone on a search to look for the best way to help you stick to your New Year’s resolution. We suggest you get yourself a small business grant. Business grants is a safe way, especially for new entrepreneurs, to get out there and make your dreams come true. Don’t be intimidated by applying for a grant, instead, think of all the ways you will reap the awards in the end. BusinessGrants.org is a great place to help you find opportunities and resources; more importantly it’s legit. There are so many grants out there. You have your general grants, minority grants, women grants, etc. We’ve provided you with the resource, so no more excuses.

Let’s kickoff 2011 the right way! Remember you can’t help others unless you help yourself first.

Are you a Leader or a Brown Noser?

Brown Noser

Let me just put this out there. Just because you are in a high profile position at your job doesn’t make you a leader. I’ve worked in the corporate and non-profit world for years now. I’ve worked for and met a lot of people who are definitely not qualified to be in leadership positions. So, how did they get to that level, you may wonder. One word – Brown noser. Believe it or not there are a lot of brown nosers in my office and in yours as well, you may be one of them. My motto is: “my work should speak for itself.” When I think of a leader what comes to my mind is a

Liberal individual who is highly
Experienced in their field and who has the
Ability to make things happen and is
Determine to see their subordinates achieve to an
Executive level position. Also someone who knows he/she is not the
Ruler of the world and others are just their mere servant.

So, if you are an individual who has climbed the corporate ladder, just remember where you started. If you got there by kissing butt, don’t make that a criteria for the people you’re supervising. So, I ask, are you a brown noser or a leader?

We all know the newest way of making part-time or full-time money is online. Well, I found this unique website that pays you to tweet called Sponsored Tweets. I’ve signed up and it really works. However, there are 3 things that qualifies you:

  1. have at least 50 followers
  2. Twitter account must be at least 60 days old
  3. have at least 100 status updates

Sponsored Tweets is a Twitter advertising website that connects advertisers with tweeters. They group you with advertisers that are in your area of expertise. They even give you the pharse they would like tweeted. If you don’t want to advertise a tweet you can easily decline and keep it moving.

SponsoredTweets.com is an online marketplace that allows you to connect directly with advertisers to engage in sponsored conversations through Twitter. Advertisers compensate you with cash in exchange for a sponsored tweet. Think of it like eBay for tweets.

How it Works

1. Set Your Price

All you need to get started is to set your price, add a category and some keywords then wait for offers to roll in from Advertisers.

2. Choose your offers

As offers come in you can accept or reject them.

3. Receive Payment

If you accept an offer, your account will be credited within 24 hours of your tweet. You can cash out once your account reaches $50.

I mean if you already have a twitter account, why not start making money from it. Just thought I would past this along.

You’ve probably heard of this book, or maybe not, “The 48 Laws of Power.” Well, rather you have or not here’s the run down.

The author of the book is Robert Greene. He pretty much break down the 48 laws of power by providing examples from different Eras and he then relates each law to his and other’s experience.

I feel since reading this book I’ve been able to accomplish things I’ve never dreamed about. It has really helped me to put my life in a perspective that I’ve never thought of.

I’ve taken the time to list 15 of the 48 laws below. I’ve also provided you with very brief excerpts. See if you can relate these laws to your everyday life.

  1. “Never Outshine the Master – always make those above you feel superior
  2. “Never Put too Much Trust in Friends, Learn How to Use Enemies – Friends will betray you more quickly
  3. “Conceal Your Intentions” – …never reveal the purpose behind your actions
  4. “Always Say Less Then Necessary” …the more you say, the more common you appear, and the less in control
  5. “So Much Depends on Reputation-Guard it with Your Life” through reputation along you can intimidate and win…
  6. “Court Attention at All Cost” …never let yourself get lost in the crowd…
  7. “Get Others to do the Work for You, but Always Take the Credit” …in the end your helpers will be forgotten and you will be remembered
  8. “Make Other People Come to You-Use Bait if Necessary” when you force the other person to act, you are in control
  9. “Win Through Your Actions Never Through Argument” any momentary triumph you have gained through argument is really a Pyrrhic victory
  10. “Infection: Avoid the Unhappy & Unlucky” you can die from someone else’s misery
  11. “Learn to Keep People Dependent on You” to maintain your independence you must always be needed and wanted.
  12. “Use Selective Honesty and Generosity to Disarm Your Victim” our sincere and honest move will cover over dozens of dishonest ones.
  13. When Asking for Help, Appeal to People’s Self-Interest, Never to Their Mercy or Gratitude” people respond enthusiastically when they see something to be gained for themselves
  14. “Pose as a Friend, Work as a Spy” knowing about your rival is critical.
  15. “Crush Your Enemy Totally” all great leaders since Moses have known that a feared enemy must be crushed completely.
